Not sure if there are any in stock still, but Industrial Strength's 2ga glass pieces are actually 7mm/ 1ga. You can also get 1ga stuff on Glasswear Studios website, and from a shop on Etsy that I can't remember. So anyway, 1ga stuff is out there, you just have to do some digging. And yeah, you can just leave your 2ga stuff taped to 1ga in the meantime.

Don't use DF. It will cause more trauma to your ear by having to stretch further to fit the flares, which kind of defeats the purpose, and it may also get stuck in your ear.

question about taping- i showed my dad the tape to make sure it was plumber's tape and he said it had teflon in it which is toxic. i'm guessing it's not a problem since people taping to stretch all the time?

Teflon is a brand name of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and like polymers. The substance becomes unstable during exposure to high temperatures (during cooking and cookware manufacturing), so the risk to humans is minimal during the taping process. PTFE can even be used in the medical fields to coat tubing, catheters, implants, and other helpful items.

yeah believe me tape is the best bet... if you can't get bondage tape(local newdie porno store has it) use electrical tape just clean them a lot because electric tape is porous. about 4-5 months ago i tried to taper to a 0 from a 2... and my right earlobe pretty much blew out.. went down 2 sizes 2 a 4 gauge. and i am just now back to taping up to a 0 i am about half way.. so it is better to take your time and use the right stuff.

Please do not advise usage of electrical tape in the taping process, as it contains irritating adhesive and often contains a suspected carcinogenic compound. Bondage and PTFE tape are recommended for safe and healthful stretching.

     question on Axon's comment...

You said PTFE becomes unstable when its exposed to high temperatures, but I know PTFE can be safely autoclaved. This is very confusing to me, so I'm wondering if you could clear that up for me?

Degradation of PTFE occurs at temperatures above 260 °C. Autoclaves usually do not utilize temperatures above 134 °C.
