Please dont feel nervous, or like a wuss. I know how you feel, and it's hard not to worry about what you look like when you're at a gym. Don't worry about people looking at you saying 'wow she cant lift shit'. If you try lifting more than you can handle initially, you will do more harm than good.

Also, dont worry about how much you can lift if you're not looking to built bulky muscles, just worry about how many repetitions you do. Lots of weight and low reps give you big muscles, and Low weight and many reps give you long, lean muscles! :D

my track coach was a terd and made me lift heavy weights, now i permenantly have big legs, well, from that and softball. :/

I know how you feel. But I have learned this, people are too worried about YOU looking at THEM, and how THEY look than analyzing you and your flaws :P

I weighed 170 and was in the best shape of my life, then i gained almost 100 lbs after getting pregnant (i was put on bed-rest) and all i could keep down was bread and milk (super fattening+carbs==eww) and now weigh about 240. So, i definitely understand not wanting to be looked at. I don't look like a mutant, but I feel like i should definitely look better than I do. I have a treadmill, and am making an honest effort at getting into shape.

You have the gym membership, you're already starting out on the right foot.

I'm sure your husband isnt going to look at you and saw "eww that is nasty-she is trying to get healthy", maybe he is worried about the same thing--you looking at him? :P

Most women don't get bulky, it isn't in their genes. You can't force a muscle to be lean by any sort of exercise.

My sister goes to the gym and is lean and toned. I, on the otherhand, get quite built no matter what I do.

I doubt you have permanently big legs from track, it's most likely a result of your genetic makeup.

I just feel dumb because he would sit there and do 100lbs on legs and I could barely do 40lbs..

Re: The Thread of all Threads

I fucking hate doing legs. My muscle composition is much much stronger than that of my tendons and bones, so I either do low-weights that do nothing or heavy weights that threaten the integrity of my leg-structure.

well, yes, part genetic makeup...part working out alot w/ heavy weight :(

yes, i am also one of those women who is pre-disposed to having bulky muscles :(

and i wasnt saying as a die-hard rule that low weight lots reps would ONLY make you lean and thin and that heavy weight ALWAYS make you bulky, it is just a general rule.

Well, it's not a rule, seeing as most woman, heavy weights or not, DON'T get bulky.

I am not saying i made the rule, i'm saying it goes for most individuals, as far as if you do not want to increase visible muscle mass, then dont lift heavy weights for an exercise regimen. not everyone is going to look like a bodybuilder, but given time, anyone is going to get bulki-ER than normal by doing heavy weight lifting as opposed to resistance or very light weight training.
