I'm considering getting a Monroe piercing, but I'm naturally concerned about the possibility of gum recession. So, what I'm trying to look for is a sense based on (loose) statistics of how many people actually end up having problems with gum recession, etc due to their Monroe/Madonna piercings. There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of information online short of listing gum recession as a risk. Who has had trouble with this piercing? :)

 

EDIT:  I'd also like to know from people who have labrets as I'm considering that piercing as well.

idk if this is useful, but i (and several other folks i know) have had gum-recession-issues and weve never had ANY monroe/body-mod involving our mouths...  it (recession) is just kinda in-fashion dentistry-wise this decade, methinks...  :-)  im not sure youll (even with this unofficial-type survey) be able to weed-out the piercings-caused-recessions vs the just-not-flossing-very-well-caused-recessions...  gl, h.

 I've had my monroe piercing for 4 years or so, and I've never had any problems with my gums. I wear bioplast all the time now, but I didn't have any problems with titanium either, so maybe it's a question of the perfect placement...

I too know people who have gum recession issues without having piercings. Since gum recession (allegedly) has ties to genetics, perhaps that's what increases the possibility of complications. I've been told I presently have no gum problems, though I should be flossing more often. I'm just trying to get a general idea of how many people have had gum problems with their Monroe piercing vs. people who have had no problems with their Monroe piercing.

 i have had my monroe for about 7 years now and have never had any problems with it, except when i had a post that was a bit too long. it got hooked on my teeth a lot. :/

 I've never had a problem with any of my lip piercings, however I've known a lot of people that have had monroes actually reject on them.

 Gum recession is more common, but if you use a labret with a rounded backing it's less likely.

i have a titanium monroe piercing and i have no problem with it whatsoever unless i sleep with my face smushed on the pillow the side it's on, then my gum is a little sore, but no gum recession problems/hitting my teeth whatsoever. i guess it depends on placement/genetics/body structure.

I have had mine since December 2007 and I haven't had any problems with it. Mine has made a little nook for itself in my lip so I barely notice it.

 Thanks for the help/comments, people.  :)  I'm now considering getting a labret.  I'm trying to decide which would look best on me.  Decisions, decisions!

True enough. :) I played around with a pic of myself and I think I prefer how a labret might look. I have my left nostril pierced so to me I think a Monroe might be too much in close proximity. The labret looks nice to center my face, I think.

 I have both a monroe and a labret, and I must admit, I play with the labret a lot more, so thank god I wear bioplast!
