I kinda understand now, but still it sucks. Ill just have to look at the differenet jobs and things.

Honestly, in retrospect not getting the tattoos and mods I wanted when I was younger worked out for the best.. I was able to find a career path that works well with my skills and the things I enjoy doing, get good at them and be able to work for myself (still working on that being PROFITABLE) but still... Think of it this way.  You need money to pay for your piercing, tattoos, etc.  You need a job to get money.  The better skilled you are, the more money you can potentially make = more money for the best of the best piercings and tattoos.  Or something like that.

Rick you are right. However, I've worked for several organizations that have no discrimination based on personal appearance as part of their bylaws.  Granted these have been progressive organizations... and that's never truly been put to the test.

I wasn't saying that you can't get a job. I was saying that I can legally not hire you because I don't like your modifications.

That's not what I meant to imply in my post.. what I was saying is that while it is not legally mandated, I think there may be a trend in some industries to standardize this practice.

Just prove that when you do get a job you are a reliable, good worker (as well as person) and people will look right past the mods. Solid references never hurt either. Smile Best of luck man, it's tough right now, but keep on keeping on.

all i want is just a little sunshine to butter my toast, then I wouldn't be the only one, treading the sea of the NA.

I disagree. a lot of places (especially national chains, but even independent local places) have specific dress codes that don't allow facial piercings or large-gauge earlobes so you may not even get the chance to show how reliable you are. I agree that being a reliable, good worker is important and should be all you need to get a job but unfortunately a lot of places (and people) can't see past your body mods.

this isn't me saying not to get any body mods, I just think that you should carefully consider what body mods you get, and try to keep them either easily hideable (4g earlobes vs. 3/4" earlobes) or reversible (14g labret vs 00g labret) until you find what you want to do and gauge how body-mod-friendly that career path is. I know I sound like a parent, I'm just don't want to see you (or anyone) realize they found a job that they love ... but will be repeatedly passed over for that job simply because of how large their earlobes are. unfair and sucky? yes. unfortunately, sometimes that's the way it is.

oh, and it also depends on where you are. larger cities tend to be more friendly towards body mods, though that may or may not change your employer's views of them. good luck! : )

It's not a matter of having body modifications. It's the matter of WEARING them. You can have body modifications and work at most places, but if their uniform says no body mods, then tough shit, Mickey, take them out. Things ARE getting better though. Some national retailers are getting very liberal.

I work at Target. Not only do I have 0 (going on 00) earrings which I make a point of to wear flashy jewelry in, but there is someone working the early morning shift (4:30 to 11am) that has a lovely pair of 1" ears. In addition, most of the upper management has tattoos of some kind and most people give me nothing but praise on my ears, the worst I get is the ever common, "did it hurt?". My answer is usually the smart-assed, "I've felt better things."

In the end, use your head, and make sure you can hide everything easily. 1/2" ears are easy to hide with retainers, 3" ears are not.

Re: Jobs rejecting over Body art?

I briefly had a job in an office building a few years ago.  No public people ever would see me, just fellow employees.  I had to wear long sleeves to cover my tattoos and a large band aid on my wrist tattoo so it was not visible.

Now, i work in a trade that doesnt care about tattoos/mods as long as they dont affect my job performance.  They want the job done fast, and accurate.  Most trade jobs in my area are like that.  Just an idea for your future.  Union trades pay well too.  Having 20+ hours of ink on my arms, finding a job to support a family wasnt easy, at least for me.

I'm not surprised at all about what happened to Kaitlyn's hubby. I think people forget/don't know that the average customer at a piercing/tattoo shop is someone with VERY little work done who is not ready to be exposed to extreme modifications such as horns etc.

Also OP, what most people are telling you if you are worried about getting a job you should hold off on any visible modifications because its within an employers right to refuse you a job based on modifications.

I'm assuming that you're specifically talking about Target and not generalizing to most jobs, because I think that stretched lobes without jewelry can be just as unwanted as plugs by many employers.

I would think naked lobe3s would cause even more of a problem, especially with so many size jumpers out there.

Re: Jobs rejecting over Body art?

I happen to have nice lobies, thanks much. And yes, I am talking about my Target, but same with most other jobs i've had. Landscaping, they allowed me to do the same with my lobes, and for some reason, even keep my facial piercing jewellery in at the time. Twas tight.

Re: Jobs rejecting over Body art?

I work at a funeral home, and they dont mind what I have as long as I can be discreet about it.  Wearing a suit covers up my tattoos, but I look uptight with my collar buttoned up to my chin because of my chest piece.  But hey, that's life - I knew that this would happen to me one day.  There are a lot more mods I would like to have but I cant have them.  If I had gotten facial piercings when I was younger, I'd have them now, but at this point I cant get them because I cant wear them to funerals or anything; it's just not appropriate really to some people.  As for my stretched ears, since I'm a girl wearing my hair done eliminates that problem.  I'm lucky that the people I work with do not mind.  A good friend of mine was not so fortunate.  When she got her internship at another funeral home, all of her piercings disappeared.  She had beautiful 3/4" lobes, but they wanted them gone even if she wore her hair down.  She got in trouble one day while washing one of the limousines, because her pants were a little short and her ankle tattoo was showing.  It was a tattoo of her dog's paw print. A PAW PRINT.  no funerals that day either. Ridiculous, right?  But these are things that we have to plan on encountering.  I'm waiting until my internship is over and I'm established with a permanent firm or my own business until I continue tattooing.  Just in case.  Because I know for MY job...appearance is important.  And whether we like it or not, body mod is not always accepted.  And unfortunately for me all I need is a grieving person see my holey ears and get that much more upset.  People just don't think of piercings or tattoos as professional.  So what I always do is have a back up plan: if i want to get a new mod, what can I do to hide it?  Hider plugs, retainers, clothing and makeup.  I always make sure that I can do something about it before I get it, and that includes healing time.  I got my conch pierced with a barbell to be less discreet than with a CBR.  I got a new tattoo on my leg instead of on my arm; fairly simple things.  It really sucks because I would kill for certain mods, but I can never have them now because of my job.  I'm dying for a vertical labret, but if I had gotten it years ago it would be healed that I could have it out for the day....nope, not now.  Cant have it in ever at work so it would never be able to heal.  So I always say "do it while you're young" but it doesnt always work that way either.

"For me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate."

I'm sure your lobes are fine, Crust, but some people just jump too much. Especially in Los Angeles where I live. I saw a guy today with terribly thinning ears on one side and the nastiest blowouts. You know, I shouldn't be able to see a blowout on your ear from 6 feet away.

I almost cried looking at his ears.
