    Taping with Scotch tape...?

Just wondering why I shouldn't tape with Scotch tape.

I've heard before that you shouldn't, I'm just wondering why..

I'm at a 6g trying to go to a 4g. I want to stretch my holes a little bigger before jamming in the 4s. So I'm considering taping for awhile.

    Please help!

There is adhesive on scotch tape, which can irritate the lobe. Stick with PTFE tape.

I would also suggest, highly, that you do not "jam" 4g items into place at any point.

Also, I think the edges on the tape could be rather sharp and irritating. PTFE tape is so thin that this isn't an issue.

Yeah, I didn't really mean "jam", I just feel like it would be easier to put in the 4s if the holes were a little bigger than a 6. Haha. Poor choice of wording on my part!

I do not recommend using any type of tape other that plumbers/teflon tape or bondage tape (which I haven't used personally but heard good things about).

I once (briefly) tried to use plain bandage tape, which I thought would be fine because its used on skin anyway, but the edges were really rough and just the material of the tape felt like it was SCRAPING against my skin and felt so awful I never even got the plugs all the way through before dumping the idea!

i just stretched to 2g using tape for the first time and had to problem at all. i used the standard PTFE/teflon tape which can be difficult to work with but not so hard once you get the hang of it. i used SF colorfronts since the tape seems to stick to the glass well when you first start wrapping. it doesnt take very much tape to start, just a short length. make sure the tape is smooth as you're wrapping it, try to overlap onto the rounded end of the plug so it will go more gradually into your ear. i went around once with the tape to cover the plug and then once more over that and clipped the excess. about 2 wraps but it might be different for you. the most important thing is to make sure to oil the plug all over before you put it in your ear. the tape will go almost clear. even if it goes in easy, it'll still be doing its job so dont assume you didnt tape it enough at first. i didnt even need o-rings the whole time, the tape held them in. also remember to oil your plugs well so it soaks into the tape before you try to remove them or else you might end up ripping your ear. after a few days i added another layer of tape, and once more a few days after that. then i measured and saw that i was already pretty close to 2g, and i could tell because there wasnt much flare left on my plug. so after a few more days of healing i got my 2g plugs and they popped in easily. the weird thing is, before i tried taping, i tried using a taper and i couldnt get it through very far at all without pain. my lobes were quite healed too. so taping was a lot easier.

I've stretched with scotch tape before. It's really irritating, so nothing was long term, only when I went from 0g to 00g.

Honestly I don't even know what type of material scotch tape is made out of. Right there I know I wouldn't put it in my ears. I agree with everyone above. Scotch tape does have really sharp edges. Stick to PTFE because at least you know whats in it and PTFE is probably one of the more safer plastic materials out there.

Even if the texture of the tape werent horrible enough.. the adhesive  should be enough to scare anyone away... no tape with adhesive should ever be used...

    Im just that awesome!

As well as what everyone else has said about how bad for your lobes scotch tape is going to be, plumbers tape is so cheap there's really no excuse not to use it. I think two rolls cost me $1.50 at my local hardware store, and that was more than enough to get me from 4ga to 1/2" with heaps left over.

    1/2" lobes, 2ga conches, 16ga nostril piercing.

Are you going to tape all the way from 6g to 4g or use a taper? Or are you just going to try to stick a 4g plug in? It sounds like you're planning to tape it a little bit, and then just dive right in with the 4g plug.

I actually ended up buying some 4g tapers and they went in with no problem. So no more need for taping! Thanks to everyone who responded, though! :)
