Potentially, if you give your ears enough time, you could get away with not purchasing nine or ten millimeter plugs. You'll need to tape to 9mm, give your ears a rest, tape to 10mm, rest and then head to 7/16". You need to spend the same time healing as you would if you tapered.
Also, have you tried taping before? Personally, my skin can't handle PTFE so I wouldn't be able to marathon tape as you asked about.
- I just wanted to add that it's going to be a royal pain in the neck to continually replace several millimeters of tape. You may want to consider purchasing the poor person's stretching kit off of BAF, it comes with a set of steel plugs!
