it tends to be an area that takes a while to heal, especially if pierced, not punched. punches tend to heal a bit quicker but if punched, then tapered larger immediately, you may experience a longer healing period because of the excess trauma. i had mine punched at 0g(8.3mm), and since i have stretched to 7/16"(11.1mm) over a couple of years since they had healed. i experienced some troubles initially but after the first few months they were just dandy. mine bled for about a week after the punch, and i experienced plasma leakage for about another week and a half after the bleeding stopped. because of my troubles i downsized to 4g(5.2mm) for a while, although they only downsized to 2g(6.5mm).stretching back up was no problem but the stretches beyond the initial punch size took a long time to heal and were very picky and touchy for a long time. cartilage stretching isa very, very slow process.
anyways, in regards to a standard size piercing, it is possible it may not show any signs of healing for a long, long time. lots of people take many months to fully heal, even a year or few. i'd go with a plug style or barbell (labret if you feel like it too) for the initial pierce and for healing, since CBRs or CBBs move around a lot during healing and will just prolong healing and irritate the piercing. nothing too heavy either. pain isn't all that bad. my punches were easily tolerable and weren't painful during healing either. here are some photos of my punches (all jewellery from bodyartforms of course, haha. double flare clear glass colourfronts, single flare clear glass colourfronts, single flare diamond galaxies, single flare blue galaxies, and no flare tiger eye plugs).
