    question?

I know there are some post about piercings in the work place, but i want to know about a specific one. Is anyone going into nursing or is a nurse, and what is the attitude and or rules about piercins/gauges?

    Re: question?

It probably depends on your location and/or what capacity you will be nursing in.  I live in the Yukon and know one nurse with 5/8"+ lobes (I can't remember her exact size) and she's gainfully employed.  I know other nurses with muliple facial piercings and they all have full-time jobs as well.

    Lobes: 9/16" x2; 2g x1 (2nd hole); 6g x1 (3rd hole). 14g septum. 8g tongue. 12g nipple. 16g eyebrow. 1.5 year old dreads. Sternum microdermal.

    Re: question?

I'm in nursing school currenty (One year left!) and work as a nursing assistant at a hospital.  I live in Nebraska, so I can give you a little idea of how it works here.

For school, the rules are no facial piercings or visible tattoos.  However, I always wear my right nostril with jewelery (not a retainer) and keep my septum flipped up.  I don't have visible tattoos, but a few girls in my class have tattoos on their wrist or the back of their neck.

At work, they are really laid back.  I had double nostrils all summer but still kept my septum flipped up.  One other girl I work with has tattoos on both wrists and a full chest piece.  Oh I guess I can also mention my ears are stretched to 7/16" which hasn't caused any grief at work or school.

I believe if you I'm good at what I'm doing most managers/instructors don't have a problem with my mods.  Hope that gave you a little insight!

    I'm Kayla Mae.

    Re: question?

I work as both a paramedic and a clinical secretary at one of our hospitals, and my hubby is an ICU RN.  In both places they are pretty strict about no facial piercings.  Several nurses have multiple ear piercings, but one newer tech had to take out her nostril jewelry.  As for tattoos, the rule is nothing visible.  I think what is accepted varies from place to place depending on how strictly your employer/manager chooses to abide by policy and also on what you have getting hired in.  From what I've seen, being hired as you are is different than going and getting non-policy mods and expecting to get away with it.

I wanted to be a nurse for quite some time but I've changed majors, so I researched a lot on the topic as well. A friend of mine did 4 years of hospital work as an RN and then moved to free healthcare clinics and she said they're much more liberal on appearence so long as you look cleancut. An older cousin of mine (45 ish) has dreads and a few piercings and runs a local planned parenthood in Milwaukee. Don't go into nonprofit just because of that though, it can much more stressful.

i go to a technical school and have a ton of friends in Health Occupations. the teacher doesnt let them wear earrings, rings,or fake nails because its not allowed in the real work force. But she allows plugs. Based off that, I think you can, as long as they are not "too big".

    Re: question?

I work in my local hospital's Emergency Department, and they've very lenient as far as mod policies go. I know a nurse who has a neck tattoo, and I know a doctor with a full sleeve. I even know of a nurse with stretched lobes. I hide most of my mods because patients can be more problematic than supervisors. One patient said, "You have a very pretty face, but you've ruined it with that damnable nostril piercing. Do you know how ugly metal in your face is?" etc etc etc.

I generally advise modded folk going into a nursing career to invest in retainers & fleshtone plugs. Some hospitals are very relaxed with policies, and others have a 1-piercing-per-ear rule and stick to that. Be prepared to remove jewelry if need be.
