Actually, according to most people's opinion, you're already at "the point of no return." General opinion is that it is around 2g-0g, although different factors can affect that, like how quickly you stretched and how much scar tissue has formed.
I see no advantage to putting in one size smaller vs. removing jewelry completely, especially since removing it completely will not weigh down or restrict blood flow to the piercing, which would be an advantage. Not everyone who has 1 inch ears has damaged ears, either.
At the beginning of the month, you were struggling to get to 0g, how did that stretch work out for you? Are you really ready to stretch to 00g? The more you force them to stretch, the harder it may be for the to close up later on, and if you continue to stretch quickly, you may need reconstructive surgery in order to completely close your lobes up to a "normal" size.
