    First tattoo! Free at that!

So a local tattoo shop called 717 Tattoo (717 is the area code where I live) had their second annual 717 Day today, 7/17...Clever, yes?  And all day they did free "717" tattoos.  You could choose a design off of 2 sheets and they'd tattoo it free of charge anywhere you want.  But only on your butt if you shaved it beforehand.  :D  I wasn't anticipating finding a design I liked well enough, but this one fits perfectly with my future planned tattoos.  I like the 300-lookin' font with splatters.

Looks like it says "tit", dude. There's probably a reason it was free - you get what you pay for with this kind of thing.

i agree, you really do get what you pay for with tattoos.

honestly, i'm guessing thats the back of your neck, i think you'll be growing your hair longer pretty soon.

unfortunately, coverups can sometimes be more expensive than  a regular tattoo

That's what I thought it said also. Just because something's free doesn't mean you have to take it.

    I agree with Krystle's comment.

Area codes are subject to change based upon population of a given area, in fact that area's numbering system underwent reassignment not even ten years ago.

If you tire of this design, I'm sure a competent artist will be able to do a decent cover up job although you may have to go with a great deal of blackwork. Just make sure to do a fair amount of research into the artist's previous work by examining their portfolio and speaking with them personally. Good luck.

It's a little hard to see what it says but I've seen far more stupid tattoos on people.  Your tattoo is fine, and if you like it that's all that matters.  Yes, area codes are subject to change, but your remembrance of that code stays the same and brings back the same memories whether it changes or not.  In his case it will bring back that and a memory of him being excited and getting his first spontaneous tattoo.  I hope they're wrong and you love it just as much when you're 90 as you do right now.

It's permanent.  He likes it and it's his first tattoo.  And I've certainly seen much more stupid tattoo ideas floating around here (pizza anyone?) that everyone seemed to love.  There's no need to be mean.  And I’m in no way defending his stupidity or naivety, I’m just saying there’s no need to say it’s awful and tell him how much it’s going to be to cover it up in the future. How many of you have gotten a stupid tattoo?  Don’t you still like it because of the memories it brings back?  Isn’t that why most of us get tattoos anyway?   Now start your flaming.

Congrats on the tattoo. Now let us stop the bashing and flaming. I really don't want to see this thread have to be locked.

holy crap I wasn't expecting this kind of response.  I'd have thought this community would have been a bit less harsh in their judgement, but I suppose when the forums were remodeled, so were the people...

Anyway, I don't feel the need to defend myself in this decision as I have no regrets.  By saying that I do not mean that it was a bad decision I don't regret.  I don't see it as a bad decision at all.  The "get what you pay for" comments confuse the hell out of me because they're about the design.  I chose the design I wanted, so I see the attacks on the design as attacks on my personal tastes.

If you don't like the design, don't comment on how crappy it is because your opinion does not rule all despite what your ego tells you.

    Thank You.

No, I've never gotten a stupid tattoo. I think carefully before I put anything permanent on my body.

As do I, Kara.  I think you'll find more people on this board who will appreciate your tattoo than those who will put it down.

    Congrats :)

I wish people would use this same judgement before commenting on others' choices.

Not everyone does, including most of the people on this board.  It's a tattoo, not a kid.  Most of us have a little spontaneity.

But that's your decision and if it works for you, great.  But it doesn't mean it's the only way people can do things and you shouldn't put other people down because they're not exactly the same as you.  We are a board full of loving people who accept each other.  If we start putting each other down too we're screwed.

There's a world of difference between honesty and intentionally being nothing but hurtful. If only positive things are ever said, with no honest critique, what worth does it even have?

That being said, if you accept the risks of being spontaneous with something permanent, you should also accept the fact that it may not turn out to be a masterpiece.
