    galaxy tattoo berkeley, ca

any one ever been to or heard anythign about this place. they're on tellegraph. i just heard that they're doing free tattoos and free piercings with purchace of jewlery this friday. i assume it's a fairly new place hence the promotional gimick. but i was thinking about going down there to maybe get a small tattoo. but free or not i don't want a crapy tattoo. i looked online but i didn't find much just a few pictures on bme that might not even be the same place. i'll probably go down there tomorrow to check the place out but i was curious to hear some experiances if any one had been there before.

thanks for any help you can offer.

Personally I wouldn't go to a place that has a gimmick, especially for a tattoo. Remember, a free tattoo can cost thousands to laser off. I know they want to get people into the shop to generate future business, but I would be too nervous about possible cut corners and poor quality.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination. [:-goldfish]

If you do end up going, look at their portfolios and then hang out for a while to see what kind of work they're turning out.

yeah i was concerned about them possibly trying to go too quickly and not really puting all their effort in to it and in the end coming out with subpar work. but on the other hand if they're trying to get people to come back that wouldn't be a very good gimmick. i dunno it's too tempting to not bother even having a look at the place.

i do like picometers sugestion of not only looking at the protfolios as i had planed but also hanging around to see the quality of what they're doing that day.

    thanks for the advice guys.

whoa, free piercings and tattoos SCREAMS bad idea to me. Absolutely. That'd be ridiculous, if a shop is genuinely doing the right thing and using the right equipment and sterilization procedures, they'd be FREAKING INSANE to be doing anything for free with the amount of money they'd be throwing away. No new shops i know can afford to give away hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of service, gimmick or not!

Theres a guy here, who I need to contact again soon, but he does a number of free tattoos a month, but its got to be from a list of pictures hes got, that he wants to do. The work is AMAZING, I know someone who got one of his tattoos. From what Ive figured out the guy is kind of new to the area so its a great way for him to get people in there, and Im sure hes gotten a number of new customers from it. The only catch wtih him is, you HAVE to go by his aftercare rules, or any touchups will be charged the full price of the tattoo, but if you follow them and need a touch up he does them free... Id say check it out...

Yogibear: sounds like jake will do just about anything to be a "tattoo artist"
    JakeSimpson: well yeah.
JakeSimpson: anything to a chick, pro-bono.
JakeSimpson: to a guy, itll cost em.
JakeSimpson: or weird looking chicks... same rule as a guy.
Dirty Old Man: *rubs his junk on jake* JakeSimpson: damnit scott
JakeSimpson: i just got RID of the crabs you gave me last time.

Yeah, that place has been kinda on and off for a few years (if not more, but as long as I've been in Berkeley), and they look pretty shady to me.  I'd stay away.

Additionally, I'd like to warn you if you don't know already that ZEBRA IS TERRIBLE.  They quite simply DO NOT know what they are talking about (they advised me to stretch way too fast), as well as selling crap jewelry at huge markups.  They are there to rip tourists and students off.  You talk to a person at the counter about a piercing and then they give you a number; you don't even get to talk to the piercer about what you're doing until you're back in the room -- it's like an assembly line.

I've heard of people getting decent tattoos there, but I wouldn't risk it.

Industrial is on Dwight and Telegraph, like half a block away, and orders of magnitude better.  They use all real, quality jewelry, know what they're talking about, and are very professional.  Their tattoo work looks great too, though I don't have any.  I swear by their piercing, though.  Plus they have a lot of the jewelry BAF sells so you can see/buy it in person, as well.

    Re: galaxy tattoo berkeley, ca

i do know about industrial and zebra both. i've experianced the greatness and horibleness (respectivly) of each first hand. i was apperantly spelling the galaxxi name wrong and if memory serves forever ago it used to be called something differant. they always had the piercing place in the back of the clothing store which always seamed off to me. any way i didn't realize it was the same place 'till i went down there to speak with some one about the freebie thing. so not so long story shorther, it was a no go.

so thanks every one for responding and making sugestions it's apriciated.

Whew, I'm glad for you. I was just there the other day looking at the portfolios. Meh. Industrial is definitely the more capable shop. Everyone there is pretty cool and I got all my peircings from there. Their tattoo artists are alright, not too good but not bad either. Although they're defintely better than the others around Berkeley. I'm actually going to get my first tattoo there sometime soon, nothing complicated, just some text to start it off.
