I have been waiting for weeks for an opportune time to pierce my tongue. I am currently gainfully unemployed but am looking for a job, so i'm worried about the few days of sounding funny hurting my ability to pay rent next month. I have been planning to do it this coming wednesday or thursday because I will be out on a boat on a big lake from July 5-12, and could use that time to heal it. The thing i didn't think about until today is the potential for it to get infected by lake water, which would be a big problem because i would not exactly be close to any medical treatment if something goes really bad. Would rinses when i got out of the water be enough? I imagine the highest risk time for infection is closer to when it get's pierced, so would i be good after 3 days? Would it be a better idea to push up the piercing to give it 4-6 days before i'm on the lake, or should i wait until I get back and can heal at home? Clearly I will try to limit the amount of exposure the new piercing has with the water, but 7 days of spending nearly all my time in and around the water will inevitably lead to a lot of contact. Honestly, I would just wait because a) the risk of infection and b) you said that you were worried it would interfere with your ability to make rent. That would be my biggest setback. If I was in a lease, unemployed, and didn't have enough money in my savings to pay rent, I would put new piercings, especially ones that interfere with my ability to communicate well, very low on my priority list.
