Re: Me Mohawk No Spikey :(

Year old pic, and I've posted it a few times around the boards, but here you go

That was the second cutting of my mohawk, originally it went down to my top lip when it was down. Gelatin has always worked wonders for me.  Above is the length that I particularly enjoyed it at.  The longest it was proved to be a pain...mainly because I coudn't fit in my car without tilting my head at about an angle! haha

You can find Knox brand gelatin at the grocery store, comes in a small box with 4 packets inside for about $2.  My method for using this -  First, boil a small quantity of water.  While you are waiting, pour all 4 packets into a ceramic mug.  I like using a ceramic mug because once you mix the water and gelatin it cools off alot slower due to having less surface area exposed (as opposed to something like a bowl) as well as the heat retention properties of ceramic.  Anyways, once the water is boiling, pour about 1/3 cup of it into the mug and stir until there are no "pockets" of gelatin powder.  It results in a very thick mixture.  Once it is prepared, you will need to work quickly, as with such a small smount of water it will begin to set very quickly, even when warm.  I found that the humidity would play a BIG part in how quickly it would set in my hair though - humid summer days it would take alot longer than cooler, dryer days.  When you are done, be prepared to have one rock solid and kick ass mohawk!

One final warning...washing it out is not very fun.  It would take me on average a good 10 + minutes of hot water and lots of shampooing to get it out.  You can leave in it for days, and it will look just as good as the first!

    Annie-bo-Bannie:

Elmers gel glue works pretty well too... I tried to spike my hair one time when I was 13... It stuck up 5 inches and the other 8 inches just hung straight down...

As far as elmers glue goes...the (blue) gel and white paste work about the same.  I just prefer the gel WAY over teh paste because the paste will flake out and look like serious dandruff, while the gel doesn't.

Elmers will hold up some decent spikes or a hawk, just sets ALOT slower than gelatin, and results in more... "bendy" hair.

i use bed head manipulator in my hair, along with aussie instant freeze hairspray. i dont think the manipulator will help you out, but the freeze might. after you style your hawk spray in with that until its hard and itll stay up all day. Cool

    HAIRSPRAY HAIRSPRAY HAIRSPRAY!!!

The best thing you can use is hairspray.  You've got to pull your hair up and soak the base of your mohawk in hairspray and blowdry it until it is dry.  Do this with your entire mohawk.  After you've stood all of your hair up, move back to where you started and start forming the fan, or spikes, whichever you prefer.  For the tips, don't use quite so much hairspray as the base, you don't want to weigh it down, and again blowdry until solid/dry.  With all that done, feel for weak spots and go over them with hairspray and blowdrying until you're satisfied.  Give everything another coat of hairspray and call it good.

Gelatin takes a lot of work, and is a total bitch to wash out.  I always had problems with the base of my spikes/mohawk getting loose because the gelatin could stay in 5 days at a time and my hair growing out a little bit.  Still showered, just rigged up a crazy shower cap.

I used gelatin to spike my hair up to about 9 inches tall before i cut my half trihawk.  Before I cut my latest mohawk a little over a year ago, i used hairspray to spike it when I did, it was about 18-20 inches tall.

I only had a little mohawk, but the best for me was the Got2Be hairspray. That stuff dries rock hard if you blow dry it. I did try egg whites once, but everything just smelled like omelets........

my boyfriend uses redkin's man-uever and aussie hairspray on his. he puts in the man-uever first to get it to stand up and then sprays from the base to the tips, pulling up with his hairbrush.

i had a mohawk for a while in freshman year.

i tried to spike it up with knox gelatin... it was a bitch. i dont advise it. but it stayed up for like 3 days.

elmer's glue was SUCH a pain. and i had dark hair, so if i wasnt careful, it would show through in some extra-heavy spots and look like i got jizm in my hair.

most hair gels werent tough enough. my mohawk was about 6 inches tall.

the best thing i could do was go by sections, hanging my head upside down. spray the piss out of it with hairspray and blowdry it. if you keep the comb stuck in the end of the clump of hair youre doing, you can hold it straight. keep doing that until your whole head is spiked. this may be a daily routine. but i let my hair lay down for the majority of the time.
